ESL 930LS Speech: Explain a Recipe

Before filming these videos, the class studied a chapter about food and eating. They heard short lectures, learned vocabulary, practiced dialogs, and interviewed classmates. They discussed questions about types of restaurants, food service, food choices, and cooking. The students used the course book and online multimedia components.

Directions for this assignment:

Prepare your speech to explain a simple recipe. Please limit it to 3 minutes. Learn to pronounce your ingredients correctly. Also remember singular and plural nouns /s/, /z/ and /iz/. Go to www.dictionary.com and listen to the pronunciation.

First, list the ingredients. Then, describe and demonstrate each step. As you speak, your classmates will take notes on the ingredients and steps.

Useful language:
To make ____ for ____ people, here's what you'll need: [Tell the ingredients]. Have you got all that? (The classmates may ask you "How do you spell _____?")

Serve them/it ___________
You have a choice: (1) present the speech in class; the teacher will videorecord your speech, or (2) videorecord your speech outside of class and submit the 3-minute digital file to the teacher by the due date.


To find a video, please look at the date pane on the right. Under 2010 > November, you will find the teacher's MODEL speech and student speeches. To view a video, choose the name of a student. Click the triangle in the middle of the photo to play the video.
